Brands like Tommy Hilfiger: Options To Upgrade Your Wardrobe

February 3, 2025

Tommy Hilfiger, founded in 1985 by Thomas Jacob Hilfiger, quickly became a symbol of preppy fashion. They started with a simple dream to show the world what classic American fashion is all about. It’s very impressive how a small brand has very quickly become one of the world’s most recognizable brands.

Tommy’s early journey to recognition wasn’t exactly smooth. And honestly, it’s kind of inspiring when you think about it. His first business, a small chain of jeans shops called “People’s Place,” went bankrupt, which could’ve been the end of the story for most people. But not for him! Well, the lesson was learned and he teamed up with businessman Mohan Murjani and launched his self- titled brand.

His first collection was button down shirts, chinos, and other timeless classics with modern fits and fresh details (Source). It’s proof that a good idea (and a little bit of persistence) can really pay off.

The ‘90s became a turning point. Hilfiger embraced American culture, collaborating with celebrities like Snoop Dogg, and Destiny’s Child (complete list of celebrities collaborating with Tommy Hilfiger). This strategic move expanded the brand’s appeal beyond its usual audience, making it a cultural phenomenon. The large logo designs became iconic during this era, closing the gap between high-end fashion and street style.

Here’s how I’d grade these brands based on price because, we all shop considering our budget.

Massimo Dutti,GAP, L.L. Bean, Nautica, and Guess are more affordable brands.

You can’t go wrong with Polo Ralph Lauren, GANT, Ted Baker, or Hugo Boss if you want to add more premium to your wardrobe.

If you’re looking for something in between, Michael Kors or Marc O’Polo will be a reasonable choice for that price.

I started looking into other brands that give off a similar idea and style, and I found some amazing brands that are very similar to Tommy Hilfiger. And let me tell you there’s a lot out there to explore. Let me walk you through what I’ve discovered and I think you’ll love these brands as much as I do.

GAP is probably one of the easiest swaps for Tommy Hilfiger. They’ve got that  classic, pure look—plain chinos, soft sweaters, and striped tees that never go out of style. One thing I love about GAP is that they always seem to have a sale going on.
